Summer-Proof Your Extensions: Protecting Your Investment from Sun & SPF
Summer brings sunshine, beach days, and outdoor adventures – but it also introduces challenges for maintaining the beauty of your hair extensions. From UV rays to certain sunscreen ingredients, your extensions need extra care during the warmer months.
Choose extension-friendly sunscreens
Not all sunscreens are created equal when it comes to hair extensions. Chemical ingredients like Avobenzone and Octocrylene, commonly found in most formulas, can actually react with extension fibers and cause discoloration – especially in lighter shades. To protect your hair, go with a mineral-based sunscreen that uses Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide. These are gentler on your strands and safer for both your skin and extensions.
Apply sunscreen carefully
When applying SPF, wash your hands thoroughly before touching your hair. Leftover lotion on your fingers can transfer to your extensions and dull or stain the color. It’s best to apply sunscreen before you style your hair to avoid unwanted contact.
Shield your hair from the sun
Prolonged sun exposure can fade your extensions and dry them out. Hats are your friend here! Wide-brimmed hat styles not only protect your skin but also your hair. You can also use a UV-protectant spray made for color-treated or extension hair to minimize exposure.
Prep before swimming
Before you dive into the pool or ocean, rinse your hair with fresh water and apply a leave-in conditioner. This helps limit how much chlorine or salt your hair soaks up. A loose braid or low ponytail can also keep your hair from getting tangled while you swim.
Don’t skip post-swim care
After swimming, rinse your hair thoroughly to remove any buildup. Use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo and a hydrating mask or conditioner to replenish moisture. A loop brush or extension-safe detangler will help you maintain the integrity and smoothness of your install.
Your extensions deserve the same seasonal switch-up as the rest of your beauty routine. With a little added care, they’ll stay soft, smooth, and sun-kissed for all the right reasons.
